Review: Young Adult (2011)

"An amazingly funny, wittily scripted and well put together movie"

So here we are, in a small private screening room at the Paramount Offices in London with around 50 hungry members of press, and what we're all about to witness is hopefully an amazingly funny, wittily scripted and well put together movie with cracking performances from all the cast.

The movie we're here to watch is a dark comedy "Young Adult". Charlize Theron stars as protagonist, Mavis Gary, a 37-year old fiction writer of young adult novels who has moved from the small town of Mercury, Minnesota to the big city of Minneapolis, Minnesota (also known as the "Mini-apple" to the Mercurians) isolating herself from everyone.
One morning out of the blue, former Mercury High School Prom Queen Mavis receives an email from her former High School sweetheart Buddy Slade (played by Patrick Wilson), the email announces the birth of his daughter, and what's more, Buddy seems to have got married to good girl Beth Slade (played by Elizabeth Reaser)! Rather than just send a card, Mavis sets out on a mission back to her hometown of Mercury to try and rekindle a romance with Buddy. While Mavis is visiting her hometown she meets former classmate Matt Freehauf (played by Patton Oswalt), a guy she hardly even remembers, and during her stay starts to form an unlikely relationship with him.

Despite this sounding a little like a movie for the ladies, worry not guys, we can categorically confirm that Young Adult is certainly not a movie where you'll be waiting for it to finish, it has more than enough to keep everyone entertained male or female.
While this movie has some slightly cringing moments (AKA the "Can I have your shirt" scene), overall it's an amazingly funny movie, with very likeable characters (and even the unlikeable characters become firm favourites). We particularly enjoyed the performance by Patton Oswalt, who many will recognise as the character Spencer Olchin from the American Comedy "King of Queens", Oswalt definitely deserves some recognition for his performance as Matt Freehauf, as does Charlize Theron, whose acting is second to none.

The genius of this movie can certainly be put down to writer Diablo Cody, who previously brought us the amazing "Juno", overall Cody has provided a brilliantly scripted movie and this will certainly catapult her to new heights.

Although this movie certainly has not been aimed at the mainstream, it has already taken a reported $17 Million at the US box office alone, and with it only costing a reported $12 Million to make, it's certainly not a flop when it comes to sales.

So even if Young Adult doesn't sound like your cup of tea, we say, grab your partner anyway and head off to your local cinema and checkout Young Adult, you certainly won't be disappointed and you'll come out with the sense that you have been witness to something very special.

As for a sequel to Young Adult, well nothing has yet been confirmed, but it would be somewhat interesting to explore the relationship between Mavis and Matt some more.

"Young Adult" hits UK Cinemas on the 3rd of February, until then, checkout the Official website at www.youngadultmovie.com or visit the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/YoungAdultUK.
