Review: Marvel's Avengers Assemble

"Throughout the film, I was filled with a sense of enthralment"

by Robyn Lees, Writer & Editor

Going into this movie screening, I was a little apprehensive at first; attempting to combine several characters with completely different personalities and traits into one movie whilst maintaining as much of the comic book and movie themes as possible did seem, to me, like it would have been a bit of a daunting task for director Joss Whedon. However, Whedon almost perfectly unites each character and you can see each individual and diverse personality coming through, each bringing something unique to the movie; working together yet clashing with each other. Be it Steve Rogers (Captain America, played by Chris Evans) with his good nature, striving to bring everyone together or Tony Stark (Iron Man, played by Robert Downey Jr.) with his egocentric ways, Whedon somehow makes it work. Having Stan Lee (one of the creators of the original Avengers comic book series) on board as an executive producer was a reassurance and he did not let the original series down, this is a classic superhero action movie mixed with humour; some subtle, some less so.

Throughout the film, I was filled with a sense of enthralment; the continuous twists made for an interesting plot line even if one or two of the character's motives seem a little less plausible. I did find, however, that toward the end, it seemed a little rushed and could have possibly used more time to play out.

Using actors that had previously played their character (like Robert Downey Jr. playing Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth playing Thor) in separate movies was a good touch and showed a kind of uniformity that brought them all together. Each actor or actress seemed to meet the expectations that were either created for them from trailers or dictated by the plot.

The CGI enhanced the movie yet it did not draw too much attention away from the main plotline and each character's dynamic personalities. Soundgarden recorded their first new track in 15 years for this movie and it was certainly a good match. The track "Live To Rise" can be sampled here at www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVWjZ6Hk9Jg. With bands such as Theory of a Deadman, Shinedown and Rise Against on the bill, the music most definitely complimented the movie well.

Personally, I thought that this was a well thought out and well united movie.
